W.TEC Girls Technology Camp is an annual technology education and mentoring programme with technology workshops, lab sessions & excursions to technology companies. This program is opened to girls in secondary schools from junior classes (JSS 2 – 3) and senior classes (SS 1 – 2) between the ages of 11 and 17 years. Participants are usually drawn from Arts, Commercial and Science Classes.
The W.TEC Girls Technology Camp is an initiative designed to help girls advance their interest and skills in information technology and have an understanding of productively creating and developing digital contents using technology tools e.g. Graphics Designs, Film Making and Photography, Computer Games Building, Programming, and general introduction to Telecommunications. These engagements help teenage girls develop an early interest in computers and other information technology while bridging the knowledge and skill gap between boys and girls in their career paths. The long-term goal of this initiative is to increase the number of women working with and using information technology productively for professional and leadership activities.
The Girls Technology Camp has grown from a 1-week program with 15 girls in 2008 to a 2-week camp with 40 girls in 2016. In 2017, the camp which has only held in one location, Lagos State, will for the first time have two separate camps, a residential camp in Lagos State and a non-residential (Day) Camp in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Thanks to the latest supporters of W.TEC – GlobalGiving, Nokia and Google, who have made it possible to have almost 100 girls in Nigeria be exposed to cutting-edge technologies during the W.TEC Girls Technology Camp this summer in Lagos and Ibadan. We intend expanding and having more camps across the country in subsequent years so as to give more girls in Nigeria access to relevant ICT skills and empower them to be productive in today’s technology-driven world.
The camp duration is 2 weeks, during which the girls learn practical ICT courses such as Computer Appreciation, Mobile Application Development, 3D Designing and printing, Digital Photography and Video Production, Animation Programming, ICT tools for financial literacy; and other side-events such as – Career Talks, Excursion to Technology Companies, Life Skills workshops and other extra-curricular activities.
Evaluations of previous camps indicate enhanced leadership skills; creativity; and problem-solving and communication abilities in the girls as a result of attending the camp. Which also affords the girls a firsthand experience into the world of technology.
