W.TEC Girls Technology Camp is an annual residential technology education and mentoring programme with technology workshops, lab sessions & excursions to technology companies. This program is opened to Girls in secondary school ‘JSS1 & 2, SS1 & 2’ – (between ages 13 – 17 years). Participants are usually drawn from both Arts/Commercial and Science Classes.
The W.TEC Girls Technology Camp is an initiative designed to help girls ADVANCE their skills using information technology productively to create and develop digital content in Applications design, Film Making and Photography, Computer Games Building, Programming, and Introduction to Telecommunications.
This Programme is aimed at helping girls develop an early interest in computers and other information technology while bridging the knowledge and skill gap between boys and girls in their career paths.
The long-term goal is to increase the numbers of women working with and using information technology productively for professional and leadership activities. The Girls Camp has grown from a 1-week program with 15 girls in 2008 to a 2-week camp with 30 girls in 2015.
For the camp duration, students leave together for a period of 2 weeks; participates in Mobile Application Development, 3D Designing, Digital Photography, Digital Video Production, how to use computers, Internet & other ICT tools for financial empowerment, Career Talks, Excursion to Technology Companies, as well as Life Skills workshops and other extra-curricular and technological activities.
Evaluations of previous camps indicate enhanced leadership skills; creativity; and problem-solving and communication abilities in the girls as a result of attending the camp. It also affords the girls a firsthand experience in cutting edge technologies.
