Our 2017 Lagos Girls Technology Camp was very interesting with a record 40 girls participating. The girls enrolled with the came from various backgrounds and schools. Upon completion of the sessions in camp compilations of distinguished camp, participants was quite tough for camp instructors as many of the girls had given a good performance during the camp making the selection of Miss W.TEC 2017 for the Lagos camp highly difficult as it took 3 days of deliberations for a winner to emerge.
After all had been said and done, Miss Benita Clement emerged the best overall camp participant of our Lagos 2017 Technology camp for girls. She had distinguished herself both character wise in relating with fellow camp girls and exhibited so much brilliance in her work in camp.
In this blog post we get to meet Benita more personally as she shares with us how it feels to be treated as a Queen, how much work she had to put in to come out tops and her advice for future W.TEC camp participants.
Can we meet you?
My name is Benita Clement, I am 13years old and I attend Laureates Secondary School.
1. How will you describe your experience at the camp?
It was a wonderful and amazing experience where I was able to broaden my knowledge on ICT and practicalize it and I was also able to make new friends who all had one or two new things to teach me, in summary, it was an amazing experience.
2. What were your expectations of the camp before attending?
My expectations on attending the camp where to gain more knowledge on ICT but some of the things I didn’t expect was to gain knowledge of my culture, tips on making the right career choices, and learn how to save.
3. How was your interactions with the other camp participants and what
impact did it have on you?
The campers were all social and friendly and each one of them were hardworking individuals which made teamwork easy. As for their impact on me, all campers had something to teach me either religiously, emotionally, academically basically they were able to impart knowledge in me in all aspects of my life.
4. What was a night like in camp?
A night at camp was amazing mainly because my roommates were fun and easy to talk to and the rooms
were comfortable which made me feel more at home.
5. What was your favorite session in the camp?
My favorite session was coding with Java using GreenFoot, here I was able to code (which was quite new to me) and make a game of my own and by doing this I was able to win something which showed me that making a lot of effort in whatever you do can reward you in many ways.
6. How has the camp inspired you in making decisions for the future?
Well one of the sessions in camp was ‘the ripple effect of the right career choices’ where the facilitator was able to give us amazing tips on how to make the right career choice which has inspired my decision on my future career.
7. How did you enjoy the extra-curricular activities?
The extracurricular activities enabled us to acquire some skills for self-defense we were also able to use dancing as a form of exercise and we engaged ourselves in some games and this helped us campers to socialize more and gain trust in each other.
8. What would you say made you stand out from other camp participants?
Well each camper had something that made them stand out but for me, I will say hard work, as a child I’ve been taught to work hard in everything I do and I will be rewarded so I decided to put my all in each task given by doing my best.
9 How did you feel when you were announced as Miss W.TEC?
I was excited and happy and surprised it wasn’t something I expected but I was proud of myself and
happy that all my hard work paid off, It was an amazing feeling.
10. As Miss W.TEC what advice would you give other girls concerning ICT?
Well, my advice for other girls who are interested in technology is to go for it with your head held up high no matter how your society is against it ,and achieve it by working hard and as others see you succeeding in it they will follow you in celebrating.
11.How was it to be treated as a Queen by W.TEC and camp mates?
They made me feel happy and special.
12. What were your reactions the of your family, friends at home when they found out that you were crowned Miss W.TEC?
They were so excited and proud of me, thy made me feel so special and because of this my Dad finally agreed with my decision in becoming a computer engineer.
13. How much will you say becoming Miss W.TEC have changed you?
Well, becoming miss W.TEC has increased my self-esteem, it has inspired me to continue on my quest in becoming a future computer engineer it has basically empowered me as a female in the technology world.
14. What will you expect of the next Miss W.TEC?
I expect the next Miss W.TEC to be hardworking and committed in every task given, I expect her to morally upright and I expect her to be a leader.
15. What do you feel will be the future of Nigerian women in Technology?
I feel that in the future if programs like W.TEC continues to run women will be more technology savvy and the gender stereotypes will be stopped.
16. What will be your advice to future campers of W.TEC camp?
My advice for the future campers is that they should be focused, hardworking and put extra effort in every task that comes their way and also for them to use the knowledge acquired from the camp to inspire other females out there who are interested in technology.
